11 Championships is not enough for this Legendary School

The university of Connecticut women’s basketball team can once again set the bar even higher by punching their ticket to the 2023-2024 NCAA women’s division one basketball tournament. The  lady UConn Huskies have amassed 11 NCAA division one national championships, including the streak of 4 In a row from 2013 through 2016. An even equal feature is the +50 conference regular season and tournament championships. I believe it goes without saying, the UConn ladies basketball program produces champions.

    Championships is the standard

The UConn lady Huskies can win another championship, bringing their total to 12. The next closest team would be the lady volunteers out of Tennessee with eight championships starting from 1987 to 2008. Before Connecticut set their record of four championships in a row from 2013 to 2016 the lady Tennessee volunteers were the team that upheld that most recent record of three championships from the seasons of 1996 to 1998. Stanford also can be known in this list as they have solidified themselves as national powers since Dawn Staley took over as head coach. The lady gamecocks have had four final fours and two titles in 2021 and 2022 since the introduction of head coach, Staley. other teams to know with more than one title Notre Dame the lady fighting Irish in 2001 and most recently 2018.  Louisiana Tech with their championships in 1982 in 1988. Southern California, Lady Trojans, 1983, 1984. 1984 we saw Pat Summit sent home winless and her first attempt at a national championship.

Championships separate Women from the Girls

The UConn ladies basketball program is first class, the history and record justifies the statement to say they are the best. Although we have seen new names come to the forefront like Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes and Juju Watkins the freshman highlight tape from USC, we must remember experience trumps talent. Geno Auriemma the head coach of the UConn ladies basketball program has been there for 39 years now. Before Geno came to the program in 1985, the lady UConn basketball, program had sustained only one winning season. Since then it’s been a very different outcome including 11, NCAA championships, 22, final 46 perfect seasons and 57 conference championships. Geno has been awarded the Naismith National coach of the year eight times AP national coach of the year nine times WCBA national coach of the year seven times and conference coach of the year 16 times. Geno was inducted to both the Naismith Memorial basketball Hall of Fame and the women’s basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. Any husky fan around will tell you they look forward to March.

    Championships marked by incredible records

Is it really a college women’s basketball article if I don’t mention a freshman and a bunch of records being shattered for the 2023-2024 season? Redundant, of course it’s not. KK Arnold sure to be another household name if she remains healthy and on par with her other standout freshman peers. With a coach of high stature as she has in Geno, I’d like to think she like the greats before her will remain a Husky for her tenure in College. KK Arnold is a true freshman talent with great floor general presence. Her first year she is showing great leadership skills while playing a huge role in assisting All-Americans Paige Bueckers and Aaliyah Edwards. KK Arnold currently has a stat line as follows : 9.1 points, 3.2 assists, 2.9 rebounds, 49.7 FG% and 37.8% from beyond the 3 point line. Arnold compares well against others in her class, most of whom do not boast BigEast competition as the Huskies can. The UConn lady huskies have  tough task ahead but if their is one coach and one team that knows how to get the job done, most certainly this is the squad to favor.
