George Gervin held the record for most points in a season opener by a San Antonio Spurs player but not anymore after Wednesday as Victor Wembanyama just shattered it. The Alien made a triumphant 2025-26 season opening by putting up a highlight reel, posting 40 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks in win over the Dallas Mavericks.

With 40 points tonight, Victor Wembanyama now holds the franchise record for most points by a @spurs player in a regular-season opener, passing George Gervin.

It was not just him stuffing the stat sheet. He was playing like he’s sending a message that he has arrived and he is much better than in his first two seasons.
His own tape for this game alone already surpass most of NBA players’ career highlights but there are two that stood out. The first is when he made Dereck Lively II bite into his jumpshot and proceeded to perform a very difficult dunk.

HOW DO YOU STOP THIS?!?! 🔥

The other is when he blocked Lively’s shot and then brought the ball down to his side of the court and toy with his defender (Lively again) as if he was 2018 James Harden or prime Steve Francis.

There was also one point in the game when he made Anthony Davis look like he is the one receiving his “welcome to the league moment.”
This is against Anthony Davis, a multi-time All-Defensive player and one of the best frontcourt defenders in the league.
Wembanyama makes him look like some random guy at the park.

Victor Wembanyama is ready for the BITW title
Wemby has been receiving praises left and right for his unique skillset and that it is only a matter of time before he becomes the “best in the world”. However, it is still shocking to many that there’s a chance he will take that title right in this season.
His game against the Mavs got some thinking that is is already over for the league.

He was a DPOY candidate last year and now, it is not impossible that he will join Giannis Antetokounmpo, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Michael Jordan in a very exclusive club.

This feels like an appropriate time to remind everyone only three players have won MVP and DPOY in the same season: Giannis, Hakeem, and MJ.

Wembanyama toured in Asia and in America to hone his skills and now, he is reaping the fruits of his labor. It’s just one but if he stays healthy, his success might become a team success, too.
