Angel Reese has gone from being mocked for “mebounds” to becoming one of the WNBA’s most polarizing young stars — and now, a possible trade chip. After her blunt comments about the Chicago Sky’s struggles went viral last week, reports suggest her future with the franchise is suddenly uncertain.
Dallas Hoops Journal’s Ashish Mathur reported Wednesday that multiple teams are monitoring Reese’s situation, with sources saying the Sky locker room was “not happy” with her remarks. Mathur added that Chicago could “attempt” a trade, given her rising profile and the growing tension.

The controversy began with Reese’s interview for the Chicago Tribune, where she didn’t hold back about the Sky’s direction.
“I’m not settling for the same s−−− we did this year,” Reese said. “We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me. I’m willing and wanting to play with the best. And however I can help to get the best here, that’s what I’m going to do this offseason.
“So it’s going to be very, very important this offseason to make sure we attract the best of the best because we can’t settle for what we have this year.”
Reese is in the second year of her four-year, $324,383 rookie deal. She’s set to make $82,399 in 2026, with a $93,636 team option the following season — a contract that makes her a valuable piece for any contender.
Suspension Fallout and Trade Buzz leads to WNBA Exec urging Angel Reese to leave Chicago
Angel Reese watched the Chicago Sky lose 92-61 from the sidelines last Tuesday night against the Las Vegas Aces as she’s been ruled out with a back injury. However, she was also suspended by the Sky organization for the first half of the game for making “statements detrimental to the team.”

Still, the Sky’s decision to bench their franchise player drew sharp criticism around the league. One anonymous WNBA executive didn’t hold back in questioning Chicago’s direction.
“She needs to get the hell out of there,” the executive told Dallas Hoops Journal’s Ashish Marthur. “Chicago is probably the worst-run organization in the league. You’re gonna suspend your best player just because she’s putting pressure on you to get better? That was embarrassing to see.”
The exec also predicted that the Sky could try to trade Reese in the offseason — or she might push her way out herself. For now, Reese has apologized to her teammates, but the rift between star and franchise seems far from resolved.
