The Dallas Mavericks are expected to miss Anthony Davis for a significant amount of time. The Mavericks have been vague with Davis’ return timetable, since the team has not determined if the star big man needs surgery or not. The 10-time All-Star suffered ligament damage in his left hand late in the team’s 116-114 loss to the Utah Jazz last Thursday.
According to the initial report from ESPN’s Shams Charania, Davis could require surgery to repair his hand. Charania also reported that if the Mavericks and AD opt to have the procedure, the star could miss several months. If they do not push through with the surgery, however, the NBA insider said that the 6-foot-10 forward-center could miss only six weeks.

The Mavericks will start their four-game road trip on Monday. Their first matchup will be the Brooklyn Nets, which is the second straight game the team won’t have Anthony Davis since his hand injury. Ahead of the contest, coach Jason Kidd gave an update on Davis’ injury timeline.
“I think that’s sometime this week that he’ll talk to the doctors, but there is no schedule, no timetable when he’s gonna make that announcement,” Kidd said via Noah Weber on X.

Davis has a history of injuries. He has only played in 20 games this season and has fluctuated in the starting lineup. He has averaged 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists over that time. Due to their season-long injury problems, the Mavericks have a 14-25 record and are ranked 12th in the Western Conference.
Jason Kidd reveals the Mavericks’ mentality following Anthony Davis’ injury

Leading the Dallas Mavericks, a club beset by ailments, is a difficult challenge for Jason Kidd. Kidd discussed the team’s mindset in light of Anthony Davis’ recent injury news.
“The team is playing. We’ve been through this before, not just with AD, but we’ve been hit with a lot of injuries the last 2 years. It’s next man up mentality. You gotta play. You gotta be a pro,” Kidd said.
Aside from Davis, the Mavericks have also dealt with Kyrie Irving, who remains out with a torn ACL. Irving was expected to make his season debut late in the regular season. However, he might be ruled out for the entire campaign following AD’s hand injury.
Additionally, Dereck Lively II was shut down early in the season due to ankle surgery. The Mavericks have ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign. Lively appeared in just seven games this season and averaged 4.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocks.
