Breanna Stewart’s offseason started sooner than planned after the New York Liberty were bounced by the Phoenix Mercury in the opening round of the WNBA playoffs.
She hasn’t disappeared from the spotlight, though. On Wednesday, Stewart and her wife, Marta Xargay, shared a playful “fit check” video on social media.

In the clip, Stewart set up the camera before walking over to Xargay, who gave a quick spin. Stewart stepped out of frame at her wife’s playful move, sparking a funny reaction.
“Now you gonna leave me?” Xargay said.
The two first met in 2021 while playing for a professional club in Russia. Within months, they were engaged, later married, and started a family together. Their daughter Ruby Mae was born that same year, followed by son Theo Josep in 2023.
Xargay also had a short WNBA run with the Phoenix Mercury, appearing in 35 games across the 2015 and 2016 seasons before returning overseas to continue her career.
“Eternally thankful”: Breanna Stewart reacts to Brondello’s Liberty exit
Breanna Stewart also shared a more emotional post this week. After the Liberty announced they would not be renewing head coach Sandy Brondello’s contract, she took to Instagram with a short but heartfelt message:

“Eternally thankful for you,” Stewart wrote.

The move stunned much of the league. Brondello, who was extended through 2026 after leading New York to its first WNBA championship in 2024, was let go following the team’s first-round collapse against Phoenix.
The Liberty had stolen Game 1 on the road but were blown out 86-60 in Game 2 at home. The Mercury then closed things out with a 79-73 win back in Arizona, leaving New York searching for answers.
Brondello leaves as the most successful coach in franchise history, with 107 wins over four seasons and two Finals appearances — but in the end, it wasn’t enough to buy her more time.
