Indiana Fever star and 2024 WNBA Rookie of The Year Caitlin Clark was recently pitted in a rivalry against A’Ja Wilson. While this is not new for the two stars, this time it was from controversial analyst Jason Whitlock, who added in racially-motivated labels to the two players.
In one of the recent episodes of his podcast ”Fearless,” Jason Whitlock discussed the budding rivalry between Caitlin Clark and A’Ja Wilson, which is expected to be a huge part of the 2025 WNBA season. In his commentary, he likened the rivalry to that of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.
“The WNBA, has manipulated their offseason, in a way, so they actually have a Boston Celtics Larry Bird [and a] Los Angeles Lakers Magic Johnson rivalry, in the WNBA,” Whitlock said.
The WNBA now has a Magic vs. Bird racial rivalry. A’ja represents the angry black women, and Caitlin Clark is the face of the Exciting Whites. pic.twitter.com/SRaKZz4MXm

He called the side of Clark the “exciting whites” and the side of Wilson as the “angry blacks.’
“You’re gonna have A’Ja Wilson, who is arguably the best player in the WNBA, and she represents that woke, ‘Yass queen, why aren’t I being worshipped enough,’ angry black women. And then on the other side, you’re gonna have Caitlin Clark and the exciting whites.”

Whitlock predicted that the racial rivalry between the two star players could bring in more viewership for the league.
“You’re going to have this racial conflict[between the] the exciting whites, the angry blacks. The television ratings are going to be massive.”
While race and racial issues have indeed been part of the drama that surrounded the last WNBA season, the implied rivalry between Caitlin Clark and A’JA Wilson has always been floating around, with both players putting up impressive numbers on the board for every game they play.

The fact that they are also parallels to each other made fans excited about pitting them against each other. A’Ja Wilson is already a veteran and has played professionally for seven years already, while Caitlin Clark is a rookie fresh from college fame. However, despite these ingredients for a perfect rivalry, the two never became real rivals within the league.
Research Showed Caitlin Clark Boosted WNBA Betting
To say that Caitlin Clark has brought in bigger numbers for the WNBA is no longer news. People already know about the “Caitlin Clark effect,” and how she is able to bring in a huge crowd everywhere she goes. However, as one recent study proved, she also brought in more bets for the WNBA

A new study set to be published in the Journal of Gambling Business and Economics has concluded that Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese were the biggest contributors to more bets for the WNBA. Their popularity also gave rise to new betting patterns and bettor behavior.
