When one Indiana Fever star goes down, another edges closer to returning. That’s the rollercoaster Fever fans are riding right now, as Sophie Cunningham gave fresh insight into Caitlin Clark’s recovery while dealing with heartbreaking news of her own.

On her “Show Me Something” podcast Tuesday, Cunningham shared that Clark is getting closer, though her return remains uncertain.
“Literally she doesn’t even really know. It’s like a day by day legit type of thing,” Cunningham said of Clark. “Yeah, she is close but you also have to remember she would be playing if it wasn’t in the WNBA by now.”

Cunningham explained that it’s not just about Clark being healthy enough to play—it’s about being fully ready to face the deepest competition women’s basketball has ever seen.
“At this level, with how deep and how good people are nowadays in our league, which is the best it has ever been, you can’t just be good, you have to be on top of your game. So, just trying to get her back into game shape is what they are trying to do. Again, it’s literally a day by day. I am not holding out any information,” she added.
Head coach Stephanie White echoed that optimism earlier this week, saying the team is hopeful Clark can return before the end of the regular season.
“Love you always”: Caitlin Clark Comforts Sophie Cunningham With Loving Words After Fever Star’s Heartbreaking Injury News
But even as fans wait on Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham won’t be part of the final stretch. The veteran guard tore her right MCL when Bria Hartley fell into her knee on Sunday, an injury that has officially ended her season.

That news hit hard, but Clark didn’t let it pass without showing her support. Despite managing her own groin injury, the rookie star reposted the Fever’s announcement and sent Cunningham a heartfelt message.
“Love you always soph @sophie_cham,” Clark wrote in her Instagram story.
The short but powerful message resonated with Fever fans, highlighting how quickly Clark has formed real connections in the locker room. Beyond the points, highlights, and hype, moments like this show a different side of the rookie—one that proves she’s not only a generational talent but also a teammate who lifts others up when they need it most.
