Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham didn’t take long to click once Cunningham arrived in Indiana. The two guards had known each other since Clark’s rookie season, but it wasn’t until Cunningham joined the Fever from Phoenix that their bond really started to shine.

On The Old Man and the Three podcast, Cunningham was asked by Tommy Alter what she had learned about Clark now that they were sharing a locker room. Her answer? Clark’s talent might be elite, but her personality is pure goofball.
“She’s just a big kid. You know what I mean?” Cunningham said. “Like, she is so phenomenal and so elite at her craft. Um, a generational talent.”

She didn’t stop there, either. Cunningham compared Clark to her younger cousins and jokingly called her the “biggest dork.”
“She loves hard…she’s like one of my little cousins. She’s the age of them. She acts like them. I’m just like, ‘Dude, you’re a dweeb. Like, you were the biggest dork I’ve probably ever met.’ And just somehow, you know how to shoot from far out, and you’re really great at passing.” [Timestamp 31:10]
That mix of admiration and playful teasing has made Sophie Cunningham something of a big sister figure — and earned her plenty of love from Fever fans. Protecting Clark, both on and off the floor, has quickly become part of her identity in Indiana.

“They are a team full of like sixth and seventh players”: Sophie Cunningham shouts out her surprise favorite
Sophie Cunningham’s season ended early with injury, leaving her sidelined during Indiana’s playoff push. Rehab has filled most of her time, but she admitted she still tunes in to some games — just not all of them.
“If I were to watch, honestly, I’ve kind of loved…watching the Valkyries,” Cunningham told Alter. “Like, they are a team full of like sixth, probably sixth and seventh players that just like work their a**** off and you see them kind of having more success than I think a lot of people thought they were.” [Timestamp 16:20]

She added that she respects how the WNBA’s newest franchise has set its own tone so quickly. The Golden State Valkyries didn’t have a headline superstar in year one, but still pushed their way into the postseason before falling to the Minnesota Lynx in the opening round.
