Back in 2020, the Chicago Bulls drafted forward Patrick Williams to get a versatile player on both ends of the court. Just recently, the front office decided to give him a $90 million extension, even though he hasn’t really lived up to expectations.
Williams was selected fourth overall by the Bulls in a draft that boasted Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards and Charlotte Hornets’ LaMelo Ball. After a bit of an up-and-down season, the 22-year-old forward solidified his role as a 3-and-D player, shooting 39.9% from 3-point range on 3.4 attempts per game.
Williams played well late last year, averaging 14.1 points on 52.1% shooting, including 50% from 3, over a 14-game stretch. He also showed his defensive versatility, accepting a variety of positional assignments. However, the fact that injuries have cut short two of his four NBA seasons raises questions about his durability and overall production.
Heading into free agency, the Bulls have made it clear they hope to re-sign Williams. Before last season, he reportedly turned down a four-year, $64 million offer, with his side seeking a deal closer to De’Andre Hunter’s four-year, $90 million contract from the Atlanta Haws. Negotiations will be fascinating, as Williams’ floor seems to be a 3-and-D role player, but his ceiling remains unclear. The safe bet is that the Bulls retain Williams, but questions remain about his long-term fit and future.
Chicago Bulls Decision To Sign Patrick Williams to $90 Million Extension Draws Mixed Reactions
As it stands, the Bulls and Williams have finally reached an agreement on the latter’s future with the franchise. In a tweet by NBA insider Shams Charania, the forward has finally received an extension in Chicago. The thing is, fans have put out mixed reactions to the deal.

“At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if Jake Layman signed a $100M deal,” BronGotGame tweeted.
“18M 5 year ain’t bad for a 22 year old,” Justin said.
“And Bulls intends to sign him for that much and for that long? This is why Bulls remains mid,” JBond reacted.
“18 a year isn’t bad these days,” Matt B posted.
“that’s a good contract lmaooo what u on??” Beans shared.
With salaries set to increase soon, setting $18 million per year for Williams doesn’t seem that heavy when it comes to salary. However, the fact that he only averaged 9.7 points on 41 percent shooting from deep, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in his career seemed underwhelming for the money Chicago is putting out for him.
In the event Williams stays healthy next year, his new contract will have been worth it for the Bulls. Otherwise, they’ll be locking a player with subpar performance and a growing injury history in to their cap space.
