Like a lot of big names this offseason, young star Evan Mobley was signed to a massive extension by the Cleveland Cavaliers, prompting a lot of fans to question the wisdom behind it. In turn, president Koby Altman dropped an explanation for signing the big man to a deal no one expected.

Last season, Mobley had an impressive run when showcases his exceptional all-around skills and defensive prowess. The 7-foot center posted career highs in multiple statistical categories, including field goal percentage, three-point percentage, free throw percentage, rebounds, and assists, while averaging a double-double of 15.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.

Mobley’s versatility and two-way impact were evident throughout the season and the playoffs. He was one of only four NBA players to average at least 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and 1.4 blocks, joining the elite company of Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis, San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama, and Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid. Mobley’s defensive excellence was highlighted by his franchise-record 21 blocks in a single playoff series against Orlando, and he became the third-youngest Cavalier to record a 30-point game in the postseason.

The Cavs star’s emergence as a dominant two-way force has solidified his status as one of the league’s most promising young talents. With his continued development, Cleveland is well-positioned to build upon their success and make a deep run in the playoffs, especially with Mobley manning the frontcourt.

Mobley’s recent extension drew some interest due to the large amount of money that was involved. In an article posted on the league’s official website, Altman explained why the big man was signed to a $269 million contract.

“We are thrilled to sign Evan to a long-term extension, solidifying his place as a cornerstone of our franchise,” said Altman. “Evan has quickly established himself as one of the premier defensive players in the league, and we’ve only scratched the surface of his overall potential.

Since drafting him, he only knows winning basketball and has proven to be pivotal to our team’s success. His exceptional work ethic, versatility, and commitment to excellence both on and off the court truly embody what it means to be a Cleveland Cavalier. We believe Evan’s best basketball is still ahead of him, and we couldn’t be more excited to continue building something special together for many years to come,” Altman said.

Apart from Mobley, the Cavaliers have also locked All-Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell to a new deal. Along with the two, the franchise still has talented point guard Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen to round up their present core.

It remains to be seen whether Cleveland did the right move with Mobley or they just overpaid the big man. In any case, they’ll have their work cut out for them in the Eastern Conference against the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers soon.
