Victor Wembanyama will miss a few weeks due to a left calf strain, which is a major blow to the San Antonio Spurs. Wembanyama is the team’s best player, and losing him, even if it’s just for a while, could hurt the team’s campaign. The Frenchman is San Antonio’s go-to scorer and the last line of defense. The squad thinks they have enough offensive talent to compensate for Wemby’s absence. But the team is aware of its need to adjust defensively.
Aside from Wembanyama’s injury, San Antonio is also dealing with a blow to their backcourt. ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed that sophomore guard Stephon Castle will miss at least two weeks due to a left hip flexor strain. It’s a tough week for the Texas-based franchise, losing two of its three best players.
Ahead of their contest against the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday, star guard De’Aaron Fox knows that losing Wemby changes things for the group. Fox highlighted the defensive pressure that the 7-foot-4 center brings. Without it, the Spurs need to find necessary ways to adjust their game on that end.

“As much as we want to say it doesn’t change the way that we play, but it obviously does… defensively I think is where it changes a lot because you don’t have someone who has his special gifts back there. Obviously, we have still Luke [Kornet] who’s a pretty damn good rim protector in his own right,” Fox said.
Wemby is averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, four assists and 3.6 blocks this season. He’s one of the biggest reasons why the team had a strong start to the 2025-26 NBA season, including a winning streak during the first five games.
Despite multiple injuries, Fox is still optimistic about the Spurs

Ahead of the Spurs’ contest against the Grizzlies, the team submitted four players in the injury report, including Wembanyama and Castle. It’s concerning, especially for fans, to see the team suffer from various injuries during the season. Despite this, Fox remains confident in San Antonio.
“Obviously, we want everybody to be healthy, but the way that this team is built, we’re able to withstand those types of things,” Fox said.
“We have an extremely talented group,” he continued. “Even when I was out and then Dylan goes out, we still have a talented group of guys out there that are playing and when one guy goes down, not just one person steps up, but I think our entire team steps up.”
After San Antonio’s game against Memphis, the team will face the Atlanta Hawks before a four-game road trip.
