Atlanta Dream general manager Dan Padover is focused on the challenge of convincing WNBA star Brittney Griner to extend her stay with the team beyond her one-year deal. With Griner’s arrival elevating the Dream’s championship aspirations, Padover acknowledges the importance of demonstrating to her and other new players why they should remain in Atlanta long-term.

Griner has officially signed a one-year deal with Atlanta, marking a significant shift in her career after spending 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury. This move comes as the team look to elevate their performance following a disappointing 15-25 season. Griner’s addition is expected to bring immediate impact, as she is a ten-time All-Star and one of the most recognized players in the WNBA.

Griner’s decision to join Atlanta is not solely about the financial aspect; she aims to make the most of this opportunity while also positioning herself for potential future contracts under the new collective bargaining agreement expected next year. The team’s management is aware of the challenge ahead, as they must not only integrate Griner into their system but also convince her to stay beyond this one-year commitment.

Atlanta has also made other key signings, including three-time All-Star Brionna Jones, which signals a monumental moment for the franchise as they seek to build a competitive roster. With Griner and Jones in the frontcourt, the Dream are raising their championship expectations for the upcoming season.

Just recently, Padover got real about how to convince Griner to stay in Atlanta after her deal is done. This can be seen in an article done by the Associated Press and published by ESPN.

“That starts tomorrow,” Padover said. “But that’s our job. Our job is day in, day out to show these players why not only they should come here but why they should stay here. And I’ve always said the most important thing is to recruit your own players. So throughout this year, we’re always recruiting our own players, making sure they feel love, making sure they know how important they are to us so that they never want to leave and want to be a part of this city.”

The WNBA star’s experience and leadership will be crucial for the Dream, especially as they aim to return to playoff contention after several years of struggle. The franchise has not won a playoff game since 2018, and the pressure is on to capitalize on this new talent.

Griner’s signing with Atlanta represents a pivotal moment for both the player and the franchise. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, Griner’s presence is expected to generate excitement and elevate the Dream’s aspirations in the WNBA.
