Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs started well in the 2025-26 NBA season. However, he finally slowed down on Sunday, when the Spurs faced the Phoenix Suns. The Frenchman finished the game with just nine points, his first single-digit game of the campaign. Wemby’s inability to be offensively productive resulted in a 130-118 defeat for San Antonio.

He added nine rebounds and four blocks to the stat sheet, shooting a lowly 4-for-14 from the field. He wasn’t the only player who had difficulty on the court. Other Spurs players like Devin Vassell and Jordan McLaughlin also struggled. Vassell finished with four points on 22.2% shooting. McLaughlin had three points on 14.3%.

But being the best player on the team, the attention was on Wemby.

Fans didn’t hold back from calling out Victor Wembanyama following his nine-point game. Here are some of what the fans said about the 7-foot-4 big man.

“Earth shattering stinker,” a fan said.

“yikes, single digits like steph curry,” another fan commented.

“Finally played a real Center and turned into the French Rudy Gobert 😭😭😭😭” one fan said.

“ill be interested in seeing how fast Wemby runs outta gas. his size and frame is just such an anomaly we’ve never seen before,” a comment read.

“So this guy is supposed to MVP over Luka yea right,” one fan said.

“Where are the Spurs d riders tonight?” a fan demanded.

“When his team needed him the most, he was missing,” someone complained.

“He can kiss that MVP award goodbye,” one fan commented.

Suns’ Jordan Ott compared Victor Wembanyama to Kristaps Porzingis

There was much debate regarding which player Victor Wembanyama was most like before he joined the NBA. Kristaps Porzingis was the player with whom he was most frequently likened. Even the Suns’ head coach, Jordan Ott, had a similar thought in 2023.

After the win over the Spurs, Ott talked about his first impression of the star player.

“Just his skill set at that size is different. I think we’ve seen it before,  a little bit (Kristaps) Porzingis-ish but this one is different,” Ott said. “The handle, his speed, his skill, the ability to maneuver in mid-air, and the ability to still get to the rim after all that stuff.”

Jordan Ott told @DougHaller his first impression of Victor Wembanyama in 2023 when he was an assistant coach on the Lakers.

Wembanyama had 30 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and six blocks in Ott’s first game against him.

Ott said that players like Wemby give him and the Suns an interesting task of how they can come out on top in every matchup. He also said that facing the Spurs center is a tough challenge.
