Geno Auriemma, head coach of the UConn Huskies, was quite emotional when he spoke to reporters after his team won the NCAA championship. On Sunday, the UConn Huskies won the game against the South Carolina Gamecocks with a stunning score on the board. The win was the teams first since 2016.

Auriemma, who is now 71 years old, has been coaching the UConn Huskies since 1985. The renowned basketball coach started off his coaching career as an assistant varsity coach with the Bishop McDevitt High School. The UConn Huskies were the first head coach gig that Auriemma got. Throughout his career, Auriemma has won the NCAA championships a whopping 12 times.

“I think the basketball gods have been really cruel with some of these kids. They have suffered a lot. Things that could go wrong in a college career of an athlete. So they don’t need any more heartbreak. So they weren’t gonna take us here and then give us more heartbreak. I am glad they were rewarded. This was one of the more emotional Final Fours and emotional National Championships that I have been a part of since the very first one.” Geno Auriemma said to reporters after the UConn Huskies won the NCAA championship on Sunday.

Geno Auriemma has received a number of accolades for the amazing work he has done with the UConn Huskies. The coach received the Naismith Coach of the Year award eight times, while also being named WBCA National Coach of the Year seven times. Back in 2012, Auriemma received the highly coveted John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award.

Geno Auriemma Pondered Retirement After 2016 Win But Changed hid Mind

Geno Auriemma has been rumored to retire multiple times throughout his career with the UConn Huskies. The last rumor went about after the 2016 win by the UConn Huskies. Auriemma discussed this during the press conference after the team recently defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks in the NCAA final round.

“They were hoping that after the Stewie fourth in a row that I should’ve called it a day back then,” Geno Auriemma said. “That would’ve been pretty apropo, I guess, ride off onto the sunset with Stewie and Tuck and Ry and those guys. It’s not like it was extra motivation, but it just happened to coincide, you know, the last five years with the pandemic, the bubble, the injuries; and I just kept thinking, ‘You know, I kind of owe it to these people to kind of let me see if we can take a whole team what could happen,'”

Geno Auriemma also spoke about his career coinciding with that of Paige Bueckers, who is touted to be the star player of the UConn Huskies right now. Bueckers has played her final NCAA tournament with UConn and will be available in the upcoming WNBA draft.
