Just to recap, their engagement ended just eight days after Arenas proposed on Govan’s birthday. Now years later, the former Washington Wizards star shared he maintained the fake romance as he wanted his six-figure investment back.
Gilbert Arenas Shares Wild Story of Faking Months-Long Relationship
Arenas confessed that he pulled off a daring $400K ring swap on ex Laura Govan, replacing the engagement ring with a $10K clone and beating the lawsuit that followed.
He had originally spent between $395,000 and $495,000 on the lavish ring, which featured a large center diamond with three stones on each side.
“When my girl and I broke up, I was like, ‘That was a f***ing waste of money. I want my $400K ring back,'” Arenas recalled during his VladTV interview. “So I had a fake ring made to switch it out.”
During a four-month period when Gilbert Arenas and Laura Govan tried to fix their relationship, Arenas had a fake ring made that cost about $10,000.
“Then I called her and said, ‘Hey babe, I miss you. I want to make things right.’ I faked a whole new relationship with her for about four months just to earn her trust and get close enough to make the swap,” Arenas admitted.

Years later, he secretly swapped the real $400,000 ring with the fake one and kept the original in a safety deposit box. Poor Govan never smelled anything suspicious happening around her, and she wore the fake ring, thinking it was original.
“After I got the real ring back, we broke up again,” Arenas said matter-of-factly.
The scheme remained hidden until Arenas couldn’t resist trolling. “Then she started going off on social media, claiming she made over $500K from me. To show her I didn’t lose anything, I posted a picture with the ring.”

Eventually, she got suspicious and checked her ring from the store. She immediately got a 400V shock after the jeweler told her it was only worth about $10k. The truth exploded right there.
“She checked hers and realized it was fake. That’s when the lawsuit came — she claimed I robbed her and wanted the ring back,” Arenas explained.
Govan filed a lawsuit over the ring, claiming Arenas robbed her, but she couldn’t win because Acent Zero had the receipts and every necessary documentation. To win the case.
“But I had already sold it and used $100K of the money to pay for my lawyer’s fees. She lost the case,” Arenas added with a wide grin on his face.
Arenas and Govan began dating in 2002 and share four children. Their relationship officially ended in 2014. She is now married and has largely kept her current relationship out of controversy. And, obviously, the ring dispute became a long, old tale that is unnecessary now for her new life.
