Klay Thompson’s time with the Golden State Warriors is now over as the Splash Brother is all set to play with Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks next season. However, the Dubs’ haul for the All-Star wing didn’t exactly excite their fans on social media.
In a surprising move, the Mavs have completed a sign-and-trade deal to acquire Thompson from Golden State. The trade also involves the Charlotte Hornets, with Dallas sending their 2031 second-round pick to the Warriors, who will also receive the least favorable of the Denver Nuggets/Philadelphia 76ers’ 2025 second-round pick. The Hornets will receive Dallas shooting guard Josh Green as part of the deal.

Thompson, who has been a key part of the Warriors’ dynasty, winning four championships, is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the Mavericks’ outside shooting. The Luka Doncic-led team made a deep playoff run in 2024, reaching their first NBA Finals since 2011, but struggled with their shots from downtown in the series against the Boston Celtics.
While Thompson is no longer the same overall player he was before his injury setbacks, he still remains a formidable shooter, ranking fourth in the league in total three-pointers made last season. The Mavericks hope that Thompson’s scoring ability and championship pedigree will complement their standout backcourt duo of Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Fans aren’t that thrilled with the haul Golden State got after trading Thompson away. This can be seen in various reactions to NBA insider Shams Charania’s tweet on X.
“The Mavericks have sent two second-round picks to the Warriors to complete the Klay Thompson sign-and-trade to Dallas, sources said,” Charania tweeted.
“Woohoo we got 2 second round picks for a franchise legend!!!” 30problemz reacted.
“Warriors franchise might be 2nd worse ran franchise other than the lakers,” Mamba said.
“After Bob Myers leff, Warriors are fallen off,” Anish Dahal posted.
“Lakers vs Warriors on who can put together the least cohesive team around their superstar player,” SamTaylor shared.
Last season, Thompson averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. He also connected 43 percent from the field, 38 percent from deep, and 92 percent from the free throw line in 77 games during the previous campaign.

It remains to be seen who will be deemed the true winner in this transaction. But as of now, GSW fans aren’t liking what the front office has done to Thompson and the return they got for him from the trade.
