It is a real possibility that Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson will play for a different team in the 2024-25 NBA season. Thompson, one of the greatest shooters in the history of the NBA, is set to become a free agent by the end of June. Golden State still doesn’t have a new contract offer for Thompson, and it’s likely to stay that way until at least the start of the free agency period.

While many Warriors fans have already started to accept the idea of Thompson not being with the franchise anymore, it will still hit them hard once it becomes a reality. Even Golden State general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. has admitted how difficult it is to navigate through the Klay Thompson saga without emotions getting in the way.
Via Josh Dubow of the Associated Press (h/t ABC News):
“I think I’m reasonable, I’m rational. That’s how I’m always going to operate,” Dunleavy said. “But to say a guy like Klay Thompson, who has meant so much to this franchise, to completely strip the emotion away from it, I think that’s almost impossible. But this is a business. We’ll talk through things and continue to talk through things. Like I said, we are hopeful but you know, we’ll see. We’ve got to figure things out.”
Thompson, who was selected 11th pick overall in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft by the Warriors, averaged 17.9 points and shot just 43.2 percent from the field in the 2023-24 NBA campaign. He still made 38.7 percent of his threes that season, but it is clear that Father Time is already catching up to him. That’s not to mention his serious injuries in the past that have slowed him down since recovering from them.
