Al Horford is the major news over at Golden State Warriors after the former Boston Celtics star signed a multi-year deal with them. However, that is not the most shocking. In fact, this news has been floating around for months and the two parties reportedly have a verbal agreement after the last season ended.

BREAKING: Free agent Al Horford has committed to a multi-year deal with the Golden State Warriors, agent Jason Glushon tells ESPN. After seven of the past nine years in Boston and winning the 2024 title, Horford will enter his 19th NBA season as the Warriors’ starting center. pic.twitter.com/xQTv2TjKeF

Horford, a five-time All-Star and is already 39 years old, will be the Warriors starting center, a position they were lacking last playoffs.

The most shocking is the team’s decision to give their rookie who they picked 56th in the last draft. This guy is relatively unknown and is not really known for his scoring.
The 6’10 center came out of Florida Gators and played four seasons there. He averaged 13 points and four rebounds per game in his last season in college.
Horford himself is also a Gator.
Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga
Richard signed a four-year deal and he will get the 15th spot. Charania said the team is heavily invested in the rookie.
Golden State’s No. 56 pick Will Richard is signing a four-year contract, with two years fully guaranteed as the Warriors invest long-term in the rookie, his agents Jared Mucha and Marcus Monk of Excel Sports Management tell ESPN. pic.twitter.com/iKP7XwHM8W

With this deal, it looks like the Warriors are also sending a message that they are firm with their last offer to Kuminga – three-year/$72 million. A Warriors analyst thinks it is now gone.
This is significant. Richard occupying the 15th spot would mean that the 3yr/$75M offer to Kuminga is no longer on the table. https://t.co/Ih7koyuOv6

While that seems a possibility, another insider Keith Richards said it is mostly about saving money.
“Because Will Richard was a draft pick of the Golden State Warriors, he’ll count towards the tax and apron at the rookie minimum of $1.3M for this season,” he said.

“This will fill a roster spot and save the Warriors about $1M towards the tax and aprons.
“If a team signs an undrafted rookie or a free agent with one year of service, they count towards the tax and apron at the two-year veteran minimum amount of $2.3M.”
For now, the Kuminga free agency saga is still alive and that is still a problem for them.
