“He Needs to be on a Different Type of Team” – Hall of Famer Suggests a Major Trade for the Spurs

Three consecutive victories have put the San Antonio Spurs in the middle of their best start to the 2025–26 NBA season. It’s the best record they have had through the first three games of the year for the first time in a while. One of the main reasons for the team’s success has been All-Star center Victor Wembanyama. The big man has been a terror on both ends of the floor, which has made the Spurs an exciting team to watch.

What’s even more impressive is that the San Antonio team doesn’t have all of their players healthy. De’Aaron Fox is still recovering from an offseason injury he sustained. According to recent reports, Fox is close to returning to the lineup. Starting power forward Jeremy Sochan is also on the sidelines due to a sprained left wrist. Lastly, the team’s offseason signing, Kelly Olynyk, is still recovering from heel surgery.

Despite not having everyone healthy, the team has performed well, beating its first three opponents. This led Hall of Fame forward Paul Pierce to make a surprising trade suggestion for the Texas-based team.

According to Pierce, it could be better for the Spurs to trade Fox.

“They should look to get a trade for D Fox,” Pierce said. “I like the core with the young guys. I like the lineup of the guys who are around the same age to grow together.

“I think Fox needs to be on a team that can contend right now. Not to say that San Antonio is not a contender, but I think he needs to be on a different type of team, and let these young guys develop and grow.”

Kevin Garnett disagreed with Pierce’s take on the Spurs potentially trading Fox

It was simple for Pierce to propose a possible deal, including Fox, given the Spurs’ early-season success. However, not everyone thinks the same way as him. His friend, former teammate and co-host on “KG Certified,” Kevin Garnett, argued with his take.

“I would not move D Fox,” Garnett argued. “I’ll just slide him in here. You have Dylan coming in, and then you can play double point guard, bringing the ball up in this environment, which speeds up the pace.

“I like this combination because D Fox is a vet. He’s not old. He is just a vet. I like the combination. I like the young Spurs.”

Fox arrived in San Antonio last season after he requested a trade from the Sacramento Kings, a franchise he was with for eight seasons. The team is hopeful that the lefty guard is the perfect pair for Wemby as they seek a spot in the playoffs this season.
