The Houston Rockets announced on Wednesday that Steven Adams is out for the rest of the 2025-26 NBA season due to ankle surgery, and head coach Ime Udoka said he has thought about adding another big man to his rotation to try to fill the void.
Adams, 32, sustained the injury against the New Orleans Pelicans last Sunday while contesting Zion Williamson’s shot at the rim. He is the second Houston Rockets player to face a long spell on the sidelines besides fellow veteran Fred VanVleet (knee).
“We knew it was a bad sprain immediately. Blew up (to) softball size — or more — immediately,” Udoka said of Adams via the Houston Chronicle. “Nothing was broken, but the next day, the swelling was still there. There was some ligament damage. He got a few opinions, and it went back and forth as to if he could rehab and come back this year and then may have to have surgery later on, or get it done now and be fully healthy for next year.”
“There are discussions (of adding another big). People are calling non-stop, but if we don’t, it depends on what’s out there. But I think we are totally fine going with Clint (Capela) and our small-ball lineups if need be. But let’s see what shakes out. Like I said, people are calling more for our guys than us reaching out,” he added.

Houston Rockets fans collectively held their breath when Alperen Sengun appeared to sustain an ankle injury during the fourth period against the San Antonio Spurs at home on Wednesday evening.
Sengun limped to the locker room after landing awkwardly on the foot of Devin Vassell. However, the Houston Rockets star managed to finish the game, helping his team close out their inter-city rivals.
The one-time NBA All-Star contributed 18 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and two steals on 7-for-20 shooting from the field across 36 minutes of action.
