Jaylen Brown has faced questions about his left hand for most of his NBA life. The narrative followed him through playoff runs, regular-season struggles, and constant defensive schemes designed to force him to the left. Finally, Brown explained why that conversation never told the full story.
After the Boston Celtics’ 125–117 win over the Toronto Raptors at TD Garden, Brown addressed comments made earlier by Raptors head coach Darko Rajaković. What began as a discussion about skill development evolved into a detailed account of a long-term wrist injury that Brown had never previously disclosed.
Jaylen Brown Details Wrist Injury Behind Left Hand Debate

Speaking to reporters after the game in Boston, Brown revealed that his so-called weakness was rooted in a serious injury suffered nearly five years ago.
“I tore all my ligaments in my wrist in 2021, and I’ve had some procedures and stuff post that,” Brown said during his postgame media availability at TD Garden. “I’ve had some chips in my wrist over the last couple of years. I’ve had some issues.”
Jaylen Brown opened up about wrist procedures and the use of modern medicine when asked about addressing his past weakness with his left hand:

The injury occurred in May 2021 and required surgery on Brown’s left wrist. He missed the Celtics’ final 12 regular-season games and the entire 2021 playoffs. During the 2022 postseason, Brown re-injured the same wrist, leading to recurring swelling, reduced mobility, and long recovery stretches.
Brown explained that falls often caused flare-ups, sometimes limiting movement for weeks at a time. Despite that, he chose to play through the discomfort rather than miss games.
“I don’t usually tell the media or the world about it,” Brown said in the same interview. “But I’ve had some issues with my left wrist. I’ve always felt I could get to my off hand. I’ve dunked on people with my left hand.”
To manage his health, JB sought specialized treatment over several seasons, including PRP injections and stem cell therapy, which helped a bit.
The star first addressed the public ridicule in November 2025 during a livestream on his Twitch channel, FCHWPO, where he criticized Celtics fans for joking about an injury they were already aware of.
With Jayson Tatum out, Brown stepped up, and Boston is currently second in the East. Scoring nearly thirty points a night, he pulls down six rebounds, dishes out close to five assists, and hits half his shots. His effort shapes how far they go.
Jaylen Brown’s left-hand debate was never about effort or ability. He clarified that it was about playing through a wrist injury that never fully healed. The explanation reframes years of criticism and adds context to one of the most persistent storylines of his career.
