When Houston Rockets small forward Kevin Durant left the Oklahoma City Thunder to join the Golden State Warriors, hatred for him was at an all-time high. The Warriors went 73-9 and had already won a ring without him, then won another after he left.
Kevin Durant: “I used to care about being honored and revered by people. That does not matter. People are fickle. The perception of you goes up and down depending on what people feel. I’m not expecting anybody to do anything for me, regardless.”
KD’s Unending Search for Approval

People who keep telling themselves that they do not care what other people say are often the people who care most about what others say. His issue is that he cares too much; no one who does not actually care would keep talking about it.
KD just made a bad call when he went to the Warriors. Until he admits that, the dude will keep saying he does not care what people think of him because he will always be reminded by fans of his decision.
The Fleeting Fickleness of Fan Fandom

Durant is right because once he retires everyone is going to love him again. Just like how everyone will appreciate and love Russell Westbrook again. Fans really are up and down sometimes.
People are fickle and the only people that can be counted on more often than not are your parents. This statement can be applied to in all aspects of life, regardless of basketball.
