The Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball team is facing a challenging rebuild for the 2025–2026 season after losing a significant portion of their roster to the transfer portal. Seven players, including key contributors like Malik Reneau, Mackenzie Mgbako, and Jakai Newton, have entered the portal.

Right now, only Trent Sisley is left in the program. Graduate forward Luke Goode has been rumored for a return, although his case would still need approval from the NCAA.

The NCAA Transfer Portal is a system that allows college athletes to explore transferring to a different school while maintaining their eligibility to compete. Introduced in 2018, it has transformed the landscape of collegiate sports by providing athletes with more flexibility and control over their careers. Players can enter the portal to signal their intent to transfer, and other schools can then recruit them.

Indiana Hoosiers forward Malik Reneau (5) and Oregon Ducks center Nate Bittle (32) fight for position Thursday, March 13, 2025, during a free throw during the 2025 TIAA Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The portal has become a significant part of college sports, especially in basketball and football, as it enables athletes to find better opportunities, whether for playing time, academics, or personal reasons. It has also sparked debates about its impact on team stability and the competitive balance of college athletics.

How Will The Indiana Hoosiers Compete in The 2025-2026 Season?

With the Indiana Hoosiers losing almost everyone on its roster, new head coach Darian DeVries faces the challenge of building the team from the ground up for the 2025-2026 season.

Right now, the Hoosiers only have Trent Sisley and DeVries’s son Tucker. However, Tucker is injured, and is unclear if he can be fully utilized just yet. Right now, the Hoosiers and DeVries have not openly commented on any strategy, but analysts and fans are aware that there are not many options right now.

Indiana Hoosiers forward Malik Reneau (5) drives and makes the bucket Thursday, March 13, 2025, against Oregon Ducks center Nate Bittle (32) during the 2025 TIAA Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

If an NCAA team doesn’t have enough players to field a roster, they may face challenges including forfeiture of scheduled games, and in extreme cases, losing their eligibility entirely. There are situations, however, where the NCAA may allow teams to make emergency roster adjustments, such as adding walk-ons or transferring players mid-season, to address shortages.

The Indiana Hoosiers huddle Thursday, March 13, 2025, before their game against the Oregon Ducks in the 2025 TIAA Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The NCAA emphasizes the importance of proper roster management to avoid such situations and ensure the integrity of the competition. Teams often rely on recruiting and scholarship strategies to maintain a balanced and competitive roster.

The Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball team had a mixed performance during the 2024 season, finishing with an overall record of 19–13 and a 10–10 mark in Big Ten Conference play.
