The February trade deadline rarely passes without delivering a few surprises, and this season has been no exception. This time, the unexpected development involves Los Angeles Clippers star James Harden. NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Harden and the Clippers are actively exploring potential trade destinations ahead of the approaching deadline.
Meanwhile, another league insider, Tomer Azarly, revealed that the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves have entered discussions with the Clippers regarding a possible deal for the veteran guard. Additionally, both the Toronto Raptors and New Orleans Pelicans have shown interest in acquiring Harden, although the former MVP reportedly has no desire to suit up for either franchise.

“In addition to the Cleveland Cavaliers, league sources tell ClutchPoints that the Minnesota Timberwolves have also had trade discussions with the Clippers around James Harden,” the report read. “The Toronto Raptors and New Orleans Pelicans have also inquired on potentially trading for James Harden, but sources say Harden has no interest in joining either franchise via trade.”
Harden was absent from the Clippers’ game against the Phoenix Suns and again chose not to play Monday against the Philadelphia 76ers. The 11-time All-Star cited “personal reasons” for sitting out the game against his former team.
James Harden Holds the Power to Block a Deal
James Harden has been instrumental in Los Angeles’ recovery after the team stumbled to a disappointing 6-21 start. The Clippers have since improved to a 23-24 record, winning seven of their last ten games.
Harden quickly became a central figure in the Clippers’ lineup. However, the franchise may now be preparing for the possibility of moving on from the star guard. Yahoo Sports’ Kelly Iko reported that Harden possesses significant control over his future due to the structure of his contract.
“In the days leading up to Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, the Los Angeles Clippers have engaged in discussions surrounding veteran guard James Harden — with the Cleveland Cavaliers at the forefront of teams that have recently expressed interest in acquiring the former All-Star — sources told Yahoo Sports,” the report read.
“It’s important to note that because of the current CBA, Harden has the ability to veto any trade. Players who return to their current team on a one-year deal or a two-year deal with a player option are given an implicit no-trade clause.”
Harden has been productive this season, averaging 25.4 points, 8.1 assists, and 4.8 rebounds while shooting nearly 42 percent across 44 appearances. He has played a key role in helping Los Angeles secure playoff appearances in each of the past two seasons. Now in his third year with the Clippers, the veteran guard could be headed for a new chapter if a deal ultimately materializes.
