Karl-Anthony Towns‘ time with the New York Knicks hasn’t been productive in the 2025-26 NBA season. Towns is in his second year with the Knicks, and his numbers have gone down. He’s averaging 20.5 points, 11.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists, while shooting 36.4% from downtown. He had a more successful season the previous year, averaging 24.4 points on 42.0% shooting from outside the arc.
Although he isn’t the main reason, the Knicks have also struggled. They are 24-18 in the East and have only won four games since the start of 2026. Amid the challenges that the franchise has faced, one of the solutions that many believe is trading away the $53.2 million star.
On Monday’s edition of “The Stein Line,” league insider Marc Stein reported that the Knicks are “quietly gauging the market” regarding what they can get for Towns.

“Behind the scenes, Knicks officials have tried to downplay any notion that Karl-Anthony Towns could be traded during the season amid New York’s (and Towns’) January struggles. However …A belief persists among some rival teams that Towns is in play to some degree. Or that the Knicks, at the very least, have tried to get a sense of what his market would be,” Stein reported.
Towns’ decline this season came as a surprise, since he had one of the best seasons of his career last year.
Jason Williams says the Knicks lost the Karl-Anthony Towns trade
The Knicks’ decision to trade for Karl-Anthony Towns looked like it was a great move. In his first year, he helped the team reach the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2000. While they didn’t make it to the NBA Finals, the group showed promise.
But this year, things have not gone their way. Former NBA player Jason Williams believes New York lost the deal, given what has happened this season.
“For sure, Minnesota won that trade. Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo, guys like that are what make teams win championships,: Williams said. “They fit on any team in the NBA, bro, any championship-caliber team.”
The trade deadline is near and people are monitoring KAT’s future in New York.
