Kelsey Mitchell, Indiana Fever guard, recently got another lease of life when she suffered a life-threatening situation during the final game of the series against the Las Vegas Aces. Mitchell had scored 15 points for the Fever before she exited the game as a result of an injury to her leg. With fans left wondering and worrying about the talented player, Mitchell took to X to explain that she actually suffered from a condition called Rhabdomyolysis.

Rhabdomyolysis happens when the muscles break down and release toxic waste which can hamper other bodily functions. Mitchell’s statement about her condition got the attention of sports medicine doctor Brian Sutterer, who congratulated the medical team for saving the player’s life.
“i suffered from something called Rhabdomyolysis last night. my muscles stopped producing and reached it’s maximum capacity. i went into a sense of numbness/paralyzing feeling with no movement from my lower extremities for up to 5 to 7 seconds. because my muscles stopped producing positive blood to my bloodstream, my body locked up from a physical standpoint and from there fatigue and cramping settled in.” Kelsey Mitchell wrote in her statement on X.

“This is one of the few sports medicine emergencies. Left untreated, it can (and has before) lead to kidney failure and death. Job well done to recognize it and get her prompt treatment (loads of IV fluids to help the kidneys remove the muscle protein that has broken down). Had the team won, she almost certainly would have been out for the finals while letting her kidneys normalize and doing a gradual return to play,” Dr. Brian Sutterer reacted to Mitchell’s tweet.
