The Phoenix Suns are one of the more surprising teams this season, given how their former squad was dismantled, headlined by superscorer Kevin Durant. Grayson Allen, one of the mainstays still with the team, said it was due to having the wrong system—not the wrong players.

The Suns are now vying for a playoff spot. They are competing with six other teams, and they are separated by just a few games.
Durant knows how hard it is to come out of the Western Conference, and he credits that to the general managers who have put together rosters ready to contend. He also acknowledged that his former team is among those capable of fighting for a title.
“It’s a crazy conference, man. You can look up and drop down two spots in a night and rise up two spots in a night,” he said during the All-Star Weekend.

“It just goes to show you how much great talent there is in the league, great coaching, great GM-ing in the league to put together these good teams… teams that you didn’t think would be in the running. Like Phoenix, who nobody thought would be this good and going out there and looking like a contending team. San Antonio.”
Phoenix Suns’ unexpected 2025-26 season
The Suns are winning games despite losing Durant. They acquired Jalen Green to offset the two-time Finals MVP’s scoring, but the former Rockets guard has played just seven games so far. Devin Booker has also been in and out of the lineup lately.
That makes their 32–23 record even more impressive.
They are currently led by Dillon Brooks, who is having a career season in terms of points and field-goal percentage. The small-ball approach that coach Jordan Ott has implemented is paying off in a big way.

They have recorded wins against Western Conference powerhouses such as the San Antonio Spurs, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Los Angeles Lakers.
They are 1.5 games behind the Timberwolves for an automatic playoff spot, but things are looking good as the lineup gets healthier, with Green expected to play more games moving forward.
