Knicks: Josh Hart Makes Incredible Stat Not Seen in 23 Years

Multiple factors stand behind the Knicks’ status as one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

Jalen Brunson’s continuous rise as the team’s star player is pushing the team past good teams in the East and West. Karl-Anthony Town’s emergence as a co-star is also helping New York remain as the third seed in an increasingly competitive Eastern Conference. Tom Thibodeau’s overall scheme also synergizes with the talent on the roster, contributing to a solid 24-10 record.

However, Josh Hart will be one of the team’s heroes that NBA fans outside of the core MSG crowd will not recognize. The Villanova alum may not be putting up eye-catching numbers compared to Brunson or Towns, but he’s the Swiss army knife Thibs badly needs for his teams to succeed.

Hart showcased his value to the franchise with another stellar outing on New Year’s Day, and his performance against the Utah Jazz places him in an exclusive club that only a certain number of players have done.

Hart was all over the floor for New York during the team’s 119-103 win over the visiting Utah Jazz. He finished the game with 15 points, 14 boards, 12 assists, one steal, and one block.

The Knicks posted on social media about JH3’s big day, even highlighting how impressive the performance was compared to other players who have donned the iconic NYK jersey:

Josh Hart has registered his second consecutive game recording a triple-double.

He is now the first Knick since Michael Ray Richardson (1981) and the fifth in franchise history to accomplish this. 📈 pic.twitter.com/qULrzLLrgl

ClutchPoints’ Jedd Pagaduan listed the former Knicks players who have achieved the feat:

    • Michael Ray Richardson
    • Jerry Lucas
    • Walt Frazier (done twice)

Being named in the same breath as a Hall of Famer is an impressive feat for the former NBA journeyman, who suited up for the Lakers, Blazers, and Pelicans before joining New York via trade.

Hart will dictate New York’s pulse for the season

One cannot emphasize enough how vital Hart has been for the Knickerbockers this season. He’s playing his best basketball since the 2021-22 campaign, averaging 14.4 points, 8.6 boards, 5.5 assists, and 1.5 steals through 32 starts.

Aside from the numbers he’s producing for the Knicks, his availability and energy have become key assets for Thibodeau’s game plan. He played an incredible 45 minutes against the Jazz, and one can only imagine how badly the team would fall apart if he were sidelined at any point of the season.

While Brunson and Towns are the focal points of the team’s offense, Hart is the engine that keeps the team running. New York fans better hope he’ll continue his endurance run to help tem win their first championship since 1973.
