On Wednesday night, the Lakers defeated the Miami Heat at Crypto.com Arena by a score of 117-108, earning their first victory since January 3rd. L.A. had gone an extended period of time without winning a game, partially due to the multiple postponements that were made as a result of the lingering fires that have caused much destruction to the Los Angeles area.
The Lakers have not played well over the past week, losing multiple games that they were favored to win. Last night’s triumph over the Heat was an improvement over the performances that they have put together recently, but they still look to be quite far away from being a threat in the playoffs, even though they do currently occupy the 6th-seed in the Western Conference.
Poor Results Against The Mavericks And Spurs

In their last game before the postponements, the Lakers were handily defeated on the road against the Dallas Mavericks, 118-97. Keep in mind that Dallas was missing both Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in that game, while all of the Lakers’ regular starters played. L.A. ultimately suffered a poor shooting night, going just 45.3 percent from the field and 31.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Lakers had been favored by 6.5 points going into the game.
On Monday night, the Lakers returned to action after a 6-day hiatus, taking on the Spurs at Crypto.com Arena. In addition to it being their first game back since the outbreak of the fires, it was a special night in general due to the team retiring the No. 21 jersey of Hall-of-Famer Michael Cooper at halftime. In spite of the impassioned atmosphere, the result on the court was a huge disappointment. After going back-and-forth throughout much of the game, the Lakers suffered a complete collapse in the fourth quarter. Despite the game being deadlocked at 89-89 after three quarters, L.A. was outscored 37-13 in the final 12 minutes to lose the game 126-102.

Lakers Bounce Back With A Win Against The Heat

After dropping three consecutive games, the Lakers were finally able to get back on track with an interconference victory over the Heat. After trailing 66-54 at halftime, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and company mounted a second half comeback, outscoring Miami by double-digits in both second half quarters. Both Anthony Davis and Austin Reaves finished the game with a double-double, while LeBron had a solid statline of 22 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists, and 2 steals.
The Lakers currently reside in the 6th-spot in the West, sitting 1.5 games above the Mavericks who occupy the top play-in spot. The majority of the Western Conference is tightly packed together and capable of making a push for a top-6 seed. As things currently stand, the gap between the 2-seed Houston Rockets and the 12-seed San Antonio Spurs is just 7.5 games. Meanwhile, the top seeded Oklahoma City Thunder are at least 6 games clear of anybody else.
The Lakers need to find more consistency in their play if they are to lock down one of the top-6 spots. L.A. has been condemned to the play-in round in three of the last four seasons which has placed them at the sizable disadvantage when it comes to who they have been matched up against once the actual playoffs begin. The team has three winnable games in a row coming up with matchups against the Nets, Clippers, and Wizards.
