LeBron James has not yet shared when he will actually retire, but many speculate that it could be near. The 2024-25 season marks King James’ 22nd, tying him with Vince Carter for the most number of seasons played in league history. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, fans might just see him play a bit longer.
Charania said that the four-time NBA champion isn’t planning on retiring anytime soon. He further reported that the Lakers star is expected to play at least two more seasons, and possibly a third.
At age 39, LeBron James has yet to show any sign of deterioration in his skills. Last season, he set an average of 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 8.3 assists, suiting up for 71 games.

Over the summer, the Lakers star demonstrated that age is just a number after he led Team USA to its 17th Olympic gold medal in the Paris Summer Games.
Many fans expect him to still deliver spectacular performances this season. Basketball Reference projected that the Akron native will average 26.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.5 assists in his 2024-25 campaign.
When asked about his retirement plans, LeBron James said that he isn’t considering quitting the league just yet.
“I haven’t thought about what the future holds, just kind of living in the moment. Especially with Bronny being here, I don’t want to take this moment for granted. This is a moment I’ll enjoy maybe a little bit more,” James said.

Mark Cuban trolls LeBron James: ‘I’m tired of you’
TMZ Sports spotted businessman and Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban on Saturday. In the ambush interview, Cuban answered questions about his thoughts on the Lakers, LeBron James, and his son and Lakers rookie Bronny James.
When asked if James should retire soon, the Mavericks’ former majority owner—without hesitation—told the interviewer that he wanted to see the 39-year-old star retire.
“Yes, LeBron, it’s time for you to quit. I’m tired of you,” Cuban said. “No, I’m bein’ serious, only ’cause he’s still so good. He’s on the Lakers. They’re our rivals, so it’s time to retire, LeBron,” he added.
Cuban has seen James throughout the most of his career. His Dallas Mavericks at one point faced the 20-time All-Star in the NBA Finals, when LeBron was with the Miami Heat in 2011.
His trolling aside, Cuban also entertains the idea of co-owning a team with James and his fellow Lakers legend Shaquille O’Neal as soon as he retires and the NBA’s league expansion pushes forward.
