The Dallas Mavericks’ gamble went full-tilt disaster. They shipped out Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, brought in Anthony Davis — who’s now sidelined again — and signed Klay Thompson to steady the ship. Instead, Thompson’s shooting has cratered, the front office just fired GM Nico Harrison, and now even his dad, Mychal Thompson, is speaking up.
According to The Athletic, “The Lakers and Thompson discussed a four-year, $80 million deal… that … would have dwarfed the three-year, $50 million deal the Mavericks would eventually give him.” Now, the signing looks like a misfire.

Klay Thompson has scarcely been the difference-maker Dallas expected. With Dončić thriving in Los Angeles and Anthony Davis limping through injuries, the Mavericks lurk near the bottom of the Western Conference. The team reportedly sat 24th in the standings early November, reflecting the chaos on and off the court.
Mychal Thompson made his feelings clear with one X reply, simply reading,
“🤔🏀”.

That post was in response to the Athletic story about the Lakers & Thompson negotiations.
With Harrison ousted just 24 hours ago, the questions now hover over what comes next. Can the Mavericks salvage value from a veteran shooter whose numbers have dipped beneath 10 points per game? Or will Klay Thompson become the living symbol of this mess of a rebuild?
In a year where every move mattered, Dallas bet big — and lost bigger. The term “Klay Thompson” echoes through trade talk, front-office shake-ups, and recounts of a deal that looked smart on paper but fell apart in action.
Mavericks Rumors Heat Up As Klay Thompson Trade Possibility Gains Steam
As the Mavericks’ season spirals and the fallout from Nico Harrison’s firing settles, attention has quickly shifted to what Dallas will do next — and Klay Thompson is right in the middle of it.

According to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel,
“It is no secret that Harrison and the Mavericks’ front office will explore what return exists for Klay Thompson before the trade deadline, and several teams are monitoring Daniel Gafford’s status, sources said.”

For months, the Mavericks have stood by Thompson, confident that his shooting touch would eventually return. But with his numbers dipping and frustration building, that patience might be running out. The team’s front office has reportedly begun evaluating all options.
Klay Thompson still carries name value and veteran experience, but his inconsistent play has made him a difficult fit in Dallas’ system. Now it’s a matter of finding suitors who might still be attracted in the hopes that they could finally get results done.
The Klay Thompson of championship caliber might no longer be with us. What we have here is someone who’s still rebuilding, rekindling the champion that exists inside. But whether Klay finds that same athlete or manages to rebuild him is another question. And some can’t wait for the answer.
