In case you were wondering, Los Angeles Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell is not part of the Team USA contingent that is competing in the Paris Olympics for a gold medal. This is exactly why more than a few fans out there were surprised to see the former All-Star in attendance during Sunday’s game against Serbia.

As it turns out, Russell was there to soak in the festivities of the Olympics while also offering his support for two of his Lakers teammates.

Russell was sitting courtside during Team USA’s first win of the tournament on Sunday against Nikola Jokic and Serbia. The 28-year-old jumped off his seat after seeing Anthony Davis score a tough and-1 bucket against the Serbs.

Apart from Davis, though, Russell also came to watch LeBron James, who for his part, did not disappoint at all. The Lakers talisman put on a show, finishing with a monster 21-point, seven-rebound, nine-assist performance. Russell liked what he saw from LeBron.

“Witnessing greatness. Ima fan,” Russell tweeted on X, formerly Twitter.

Unsurprisingly, Russell’s surprise cameo in the Paris Games was quick to draw the attention of the fans on social media.

Lakers fans will tell you he's a bad teammate tho https://t.co/cWvDDkpVCO

    — DOM – Epic Hoops (@DominickNBA) July 28, 2024

More than a few Lakers fans came to Russell’s defense after he was randomly labeled as a “bad teammate.”

No one has said dlo is a bad teammate

    — austinreavefan (@Kdsburner12341) July 28, 2024

No, we won't… he's always been a great teammate, but the results he produces when the games matter most are less than desirable for someone being paid to be 3rd best to LeBron & AD.

    — Amateurcapper (@Amateurcapper) July 29, 2024

I'll just assume you are engagement farming. He's an awesome teammate and fun to watch. His defense and production variability gives me concerns in the playoffs. His locker room presence helped bigtime after he arrived via trade.

    — 615Lakers (@615Lakers) July 28, 2024

Not one Lakers fans said he's a bad teammate laker fans love him, he just doesn't show up in the playoffs

    — Vinnokk (@vinnokk) July 29, 2024

Regardless of what you think of him, Russell flying all the way to Paris to support his teammates and the rest of the national squad is an undeniably cool gesture from the Lakers guard.
