The Los Angeles Lakers still don’t have a head coach. After getting rejected by UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley, the Lakers are still busy weighing their options and looking for someone to fill the void left on Los Angeles’ bench after firing Darvin Ham following a first-round exit from the 2024 NBA Playoffs at the hands of the Denver Nuggets.
Will the Detroit Pistons try to steal a Los Angeles Lakers coaching candidate?

James Borrego and JJ Redick are two of the names most linked to the Lakers job. But they are also mentioned by Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports as possible targets for the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons have a new vacancy to fill after Monty Williams got handed his walking papers.
James Borrego could be a name to watch, league sources told Yahoo Sports, as well as ESPN analyst JJ Redick. Redick is currently a prime candidate for the Lakers job, so it isn’t known how much traction Detroit could actually gain.
This has the potential to add drama to the coaching search of the Lakers, but again, this is nothing more than a speculation – for now.
In Williams’ first and only season with the Pistons, Detroit won just 14 games and lost 68 – the fewest victories ever in a season in franchise history.
Goodwill also noted a similarity between Redick and new Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon, as both men are products of the Duke Blue Devils basketball program. That common denominator between the two may or may not play a factor, but who knows?
