Magic Johnson, a former basketball player, opened up about his struggles living with HIV for the past 33 years. On World AIDS Day, i.e. December 1, the legend put up a post on the social media platform backing those who struggle with the disease. The 65-year-old player also gave his gratitude to those medical professionals who help those who have been diagnosed with the disease.
Johnson was diagnosed with HIV before the 91-92 NBA season during a routine physical checkup. Dr. Michael Mellman, who was the team’s physician at that time, personally delivered the news to the player. While the news itself was shocking to Johnson and heart-breaking, it broke him even more that he had to tell his wife, Cookie, that he had been unfaithful to her.
“Today, on World AIDS Day, I take a moment to reflect on my journey living with HIV for 33 years,” Johnson wrote. “It’s been a long road, but I’m healthy and stronger than ever due to the medical advancements, research, and work of those in the HIV/AIDS community! I want to thank all the doctors, scientists, and everyone who’s contributed to the HIV/AIDS fight.”
“We’ve come a long way, but there’s still a lot of work to do—especially when it comes to finding a cure and fighting the stigma that still affects so many, specifically in marginalized communities. Let’s honor those we’ve lost to HIV/AIDs and work to support those still fighting!” Johnson posted on X.

Magic Johnson’s wife, Cookie Johnson, stood as a rock beside him, even after knowing that the player had cheated on her and contracted a life-threatening illness. In an interview with CBS years after the diagnosis, Mrs. Johnson went on to say that the only thing that mattered to her was that her husband’s life was in danger, and did not care much about how he got infected in the first place.
