Connecticut Sun shooting guard Marina Mabrey was in full support of her rookie teammate, Saniya Rivers, as the latter recently made her first historic record as she reached a milestone career high.
On Sunday night, Sun rookie Saniya Rivers made a little history by becoming the fastest guard in WNBA history to have 30 career blocks. Rivers was recognized for the achievement during the Sun’s overtime loss to the Indiana Fever where Rivers blocked a career-high five shots on Sunday, bringing her total to 32 this season in just 31 games. With the news, her teammate, shooting guard Marina Mabrey, showed support and respect for Rivers on social media.

On her Instagram story, Mambrey shared the post delivering the news of Rivers’ achievement, adding in a caption with a star emoji and a finger pointing up.
Rivers’ defensive showcase also marked the first time a rookie coming off the bench has recorded five blocks in a single game, underscoring her immediate impact on both ends of the floor.
So far in her rookie year, Rivers is well-known for her high energy and instincts and has had multiple blocks in nine games this season. She is averaging 8.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game.
Marina Mabrey Protects Sophie Cunningham After Injury
In an unexpected act of sportsmanship, a WNBA rivalry took a step toward goodwill when Connecticut Sun guard Marina Mabrey was caught on camera running to defend Indiana Fever forward Sophie Cunningham after she injured her leg, an injury that can often incite confrontations on the court.

Whoever saw and videoed Marina Mabrey hold a towel for privacy when Sophie was tackled by Hartley, post it please. I need to see it to believe it.

Generally, Sun players aren’t the biggest fans of Cunningham as an opponent, but Mabrey was one of the first players to arrive at light of Cunningham on the floor and provided a towel to cover her up from the view of the cameras and attending crowd while medical personnel evaluated the injury.
One fan said that Mabrey’s response showed you could see why people “have a hard time hating her,” even for rival fans. Others provided a glimpse of her personality when they shared their individual stories of meeting Mabrey away from the game saying she was “super nice” and genuine and entirely different than during a game where she is highly charged.

The evaluation is still ongoing to determine how severe Cunningham’s injury is, but Mabrey’s unique response leaves a lasting impression beyond the game itself, even when there is no mutual respect during the 40 minutes played.
So far this season, Marina Mabrey averages 14.3 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game, and 3.9 assists.
