REPORT: Mark Cuban $750 Million Investment, Launches Empire To Snag Sports Franchises

The Dallas Mavericks minority owner, Mark Cuban, has joined forces with Harbinger Sports Partners, a new investment group aiming to acquire stakes across the NBA, NFL, and MLB. According to Front Office Sports, the fund includes notable names like venture capitalist and Shark Tank guest investor Rashaun Williams, and plans to raise $750 million to invest in professional sports teams — each investment targeting roughly a 5% ownership stake.

A Sportico report added more details, quoting Williams as saying the group will look to deploy between $50 to $150 million into 15 different teams. Mark Cuban, who sold the Mavs’ majority stake last year but retained control of basketball operations, is no stranger to the business of sports — and now looks ready to take a more diversified approach.

“We’re at the very early innings in how we view investing in sports,” Williams said. “As we go from sports 1.0 to 2.0, we see teams moving from ticket and sponsorship sales organizations to media companies and even finding new revenue sources locally to grow revenue.”

New regulations allowing private equity firms to hold minority stakes in franchises open the door wide for Cuban and company to build out a powerful and strategic sports investment portfolio.

All that’s left now? See where Harbinger makes its first move.

Mark Cuban Says Goodbye to Shark Tank

As Mark Cuban leans into this next chapter of investing, he’s closing the book on another — his time on Shark Tank.

After more than a decade of deal-making on the hit business reality show, Cuban’s final episode is set to air Friday night. He first appeared as a guest Shark in Season 2 back in 2011 before becoming a full-time investor the following season.

Since then, Cuban has been a fixture in the Tank, backing everything from scrappy startups to future household names, and mentoring entrepreneurs with his signature no-nonsense advice.

In 2023, he announced plans to leave the show to spend more time with his family and shift his focus toward other ventures, like Harbinger.

And now, after more than a decade serving as a Shark, Cuban’s final episode of Shark Tank will air on Friday, marking an end to more than a decade of closing deals, changing someone’s life, and giving advice to promising entrepreneurs.
