Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd had success in making a non-point guard embrace that position. Still, some doubted him when he tried to do it again and this time with 2025 no. 1 pick Cooper Flagg.

Even the super rookie himself had doubts. He is more used to playing the forward since high school and so, the initial emotions he felt after hearing the news was astonishment.
“It was kind of crazy,” Flagg said in an interview with Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki through Prime Sorts.
“I mean, I definitely doubted it a little bit. Wasn’t as confident going at point guard.”
Although played out of position, he’s learned the ropes of being a point guard and he is now thankful to his coach.
“J-Kidd wanted to stick me out there and kind of throw me into the fire and right now I’m kind of reaping some of those benefits.”

Cooper Flagg’s passing game so far
Flagg is yet to record a triple double but he has recorded at least one assist in all but three games he’s had in his young NBA career. Two of those games came in the first two months.
Four-time champion coach Steve Kerr thought his passing game is getting better. He made the comments back in December when Mavs played the Golden State Warriors during Christmas Day.
“An incredible talent. Great feel for the game, size, athleticism. The passing is what really stands out,” Kerr told reporters.

“Last game, he got it going from 3. But until last game, he didn’t look like a huge threat from 3 so you can literally see him growing day by day.”
Flagg is getting a lot of touches even if he is still a rookie. Reading the game and making plays without scoring will be a crucial aspect of his development. He scored at least 30 points in four of their last five games. He recorded a career-high 49 points in a loss to the Charlotte Hornets.
