In a swift and surprising decision, the Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball team has parted ways with head coach Ben Johnson. The move was announced by Athletics Director Mark Coyle in the early hours of Thursday morning, immediately after the team’s flight landed in Minneapolis. The decision came less than a day after ESPN reported that Johnson was “likely” to receive a fifth season at Minnesota.

Johnson, a Minneapolis native and former Gophers player, concluded his tenure with a 56-71 overall record, including a disappointing 22-57 mark in Big Ten play since taking over the program in the 2021-22 season. The team has struggled in a first-round exit in the Big Ten Tournament, where they fell to Northwestern, leaving them with a 15-17 record for the 2423-25 season.

Despite an improved 9-11 Big Ten record last season, the Gophers regressed to 7-13 in conference play this year. Throughout his four-year tenure, Johnson’s teams failed to secure an NCAA Tournament appearance, extending the program’s tournament drought to six seasons. This lack of postseason success likely played a key role in Coyle’s decision to make a coaching change.

    The Decision Behind Johnson’s Dismissal

Mark Coyle released a statement addressing the decision, emphasizing the program’s need for competitiveness at the highest level.

“These decisions are difficult and are made after careful consideration and evaluation,” Coyle said. “The expectation for our program is to compete for championships, and unfortunately, we have not done that in the last four years.”

Given the team’s lack of NCAA Tournament appearances, it became clear that a change in leadership was necessary. Johnson was originally brought in with the hope of revitalizing the program, but inconsistency and struggles in conference play ultimately led to his dismissal.

    What’s Next for Minnesota Basketball?

With Johnson’s departure, the University of Minnesota will now begin a nationwide search for its next head coach. Coyle confirmed that the process would start immediately, as the program aims to find a leader who can elevate the Gophers into a competitive force in the Big Ten. The next hire will be vital in shaping the program’s future, especially with the increased competitiveness of the conference.

Minnesota will be looking for a coach who can not only develop talent but also bring in top recruits to bolster the roster. The Big Ten remains one of the toughest conferences in college basketball, and the Gophers will need a strong leader who can guide them back to national prominence.

    Johnson’s Legacy at Minnesota

Although Johnson’s tenure was marked by struggles, he remained dedicated to the program and brought passion to his role as head coach. As a former player who transferred to Minnesota from Northwestern, he had a deep connection to the university and was committed to its success. However, the on-court results did not meet expectations, leading to this difficult but necessary change.

For Gophers fans, the upcoming coaching search brings both uncertainty and excitement. While Johnson’s departure marks the end of an era, it also signals a fresh start and a chance for the program to rebuild and compete at a higher level.

As Minnesota begins its search for a new head coach, all eyes will be on the athletics department to see who will lead the Gophers into the next chapter of their basketball history.
