Lots of mock trade proposals and scenarios involving Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young have been floated around, including one where he lands with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The trade rumors involving Young is not going away. And it’s not going to fade until something definitive about his future comes around.
What’s Trae Young outlook in a potential trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves?
Joshua Buckhalter of Soaring Down South thinks that Trae Young, despite his high-usage ways with the Hawks, could work alongside someone like Edwards — another guy who enjoys a ton of possession to himself in Minnesota.
It’s not a pairing that makes sense at first blush; pairing Young with another ball-dominant star in Dejounte Murray hasn’t played out as desired. There is reason to believe a similar pairing with Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards would suffer the same fate.
Karl-Anthony Towns had the second-highest usage rate among players with 60-plus appearances on the Timberwolves in the regular season at 27.4%, per Basketball Reference.
Edwards could come down from his career-high 32.4% mark.
A potential pairing of Young and Edwards is enticing to think about. It would be a challenge for the Timberwolves coaching staff to find the right scheme that will ensure an optimal offense involving two ball-dominant offensive weapons. Still, the promise of a Young-Edwards tandem is undeniably interesting, to say the least.
The Timberwolves are already getting a great look at a combo similar to that in the conference finals round, as they have been dealing for the last several days with the Dallas Mavericks superstar 1-2 punch of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic.
