Two years ago, NBA fans laughed off Becky Hammon’s claim that the New York Knicks didn’t have the roster to win a championship. Fast forward to 2025, the clip is back — and the tone feels different.
On ESPN, Hammon sparred with Kendrick Perkins about the Knicks. “They’re not getting into that tier… They don’t have that Dude,” she said. Perkins pushed back: “They do have that Dude… Jalen Brunson.” Hammon didn’t budge: “Nah, he too small.”
Brunson has since led New York to an NBA Cup, but NBA fans sided with Hammon’s old take.

@MATt__0o said, “She was right cuz yall still didn’t win a championship.”

@Big_Keez added, “Can someone tell Knicks fans that leading a team to an NBA Cup chip ain’t the same as a real championship. Until then, Becks comments are fair.”
And @F5_Cashes capped it off: “respectfully she’s right. Brunson is fantastic, but i just think unless ur Steph Curry that height as ur best player doesn’t work. U would need a perfect supporting cast around him.”
Hammon’s words haven’t slowed Brunson.
He’s averaging 29.1 points, 6.6 assists, and 3.4 rebounds over 26 games. This week alone: NBA Cup MVP, a game‑winner against Indiana, a career MSG‑high 47 against Miami, plus Eastern Conference Player of the Week.
“Brunson Burner is HOT”: NBA fans react to Jalen Brunson’s career MSG-High scoring night against the Miami Heat
Against the Heat, Brunson lit up Madison Square Garden in a 132-125 win.
NBA fans couldn’t get enough.

@KNICKSTAPE__ noted, “Five different dudes on the Heat tried to guard and not a single one could stop buckets.”
@H0ldingPattern marveled, “Insane that he got some of these shots off as cleanly as he did.”
Brunson finished with 47 points, 8 assists, and 3 rebounds — proving he can carry the Knicks, even if NBA fans still debate whether he’s “that Dude.”
