Thanks to Stephen A. Smith’s latest commentary, NBA fans have added even more fuel to the ongoing tension between the LA Lakers’ governor, Jeanie Buss, and franchise star LeBron James.
Reacting to the article written by ESPN’s Baxter Holmes, Smith used First Take to push back on the idea that James has been more of a problem than a solution in Los Angeles. According to Smith, the Lakers’ direction changed the moment James arrived.
“The one thing that this article, I believe, left out was that LeBron James was worth it… The Lakers were nowhere. You were praying that LeBron James came into town,” Smith said. “I give him and Anthony Davis for winning the championship in the bubble. I also give him credit for resurrecting this Lakers franchise and returning them to relevancy.”
Smith’s defense of James quickly divided fans.
@J_DNation agreed, but with conditions, saying, “He’s correct but that doesn’t excuse the entitlement and ego that’s completely destroying this team’s chemistry.”

Others weren’t convinced at all. @icedoutskulhedz pointed out, “They literally missed the playoffs twice and got bounced from the first round multiple times during LeBrons Lakers tenure… what did he save???”
Meanwhile, @djdredfoxx dismissed the entire argument, writing, “Lakers are never irrelevant. Why do you think LBJ came here?”

Amid the noise, Buss attempted to cool things down by releasing a statement, saying James shouldn’t be dragged into the ongoing Buss family feud.
“Two can play that game”: NBA fans react to LeBron James’ comments on ESPN’s Buss family story
After Smith’s comments sparked debate, James eventually shared his own thoughts.
Following the Lakers’ 112-104 loss to the LA Clippers on Thursday, James addressed the situation directly.
“When I came to this organization, my whole mindset was about restoring excellence,” James said. “I don’t really care about articles… I don’t care how somebody feels about me.”

That response didn’t sit well with everyone.
@Sportsmecca said, “If he doesn’t care why does he have his little Kieber Elf stirring drama on his podcast. LeBron is behind it and Jeannie just retaliated. Two can play that game.”
@LukaToBron added, “Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Jeanie.”
Meanwhile, @McBall traced the issues further back, saying, “Westbrook knew you personally. How’d that work out? Reason why no one wants to be on his team.”
With both sides now speaking publicly, the situation in Los Angeles continues to give fans plenty to argue about.
