An NBA scout recently provided a candid assessment of Cooper Flagg, noting that while he possesses many elite qualities, he may not be the best offensive prospect in the upcoming draft. This eye-opening review adds a new layer to the ongoing conversation about Flagg’s potential as a top pick.

As the 2025 NBA Draft approaches, Flagg stands out as the top prospect, capturing the attention of scouts and analysts alike. Currently playing at Duke, Flagg has shown remarkable potential, averaging impressive numbers that underscore his capabilities on the court. His unique blend of size, skill, and versatility makes him a compelling candidate for the first overall pick.

Flagg’s usage rate is particularly noteworthy. Despite some criticism regarding his shooting efficiency, which currently hovers around 50.5% true shooting, it’s essential to consider the context of his performance. At just 17 years old, Flagg is handling a significant offensive load, with a usage rate of 30.4%. This level of responsibility is rare for a player of his height—6’9″—making him an intriguing outlier among high-major freshmen.

His ability to create plays is another critical factor in his appeal. Flagg has consistently demonstrated high-level passing skills, reflected in his assist rate and ability to manage turnovers. This playmaking ability suggests that he could effectively command the ball at the NBA level, reminiscent of successful players like Ben Simmons and Scottie Barnes, who thrived under similar circumstances.

Even though he’s having a great run with the Blue Devils this season, an NBA scout noted that Flagg’s offense might not be enough yet. This is detailed more in an analysis by ESPN.

“I don’t think [Flagg] is going to be the best offensive prospect in the draft, and sometimes that’s just who goes 1, which is reasonable,” one Western Conference scout said.

Shooting projection is always a challenge in scouting, yet Flagg’s indicators are promising. Though he has struggled with three-point shooting early on, his free-throw percentage suggests a pathway to improvement. With solid shooting mechanics and the potential for increased volume, Flagg could develop into a reliable scorer as he matures.

Defensively, Flagg excels as well, boasting impressive steal and block rates that highlight his athleticism and instincts. His ability to guard multiple positions and disrupt opposing offenses raises his overall value significantly. As the draft draws nearer, Cooper Flagg’s combination of offensive and defensive skills will undoubtedly make him a focal point for NBA teams looking to secure the next generation of talent.
