Phoenix Suns’ Kevin Durant shared his thoughts on the declining NBA ratings, suggesting that fans might be growing weary of certain aspects of the game. His insights sparked conversations about the factors influencing viewership trends in the league.

The NBA faced a significant decline in viewership during the first half of the 2024-2025 season, with ratings dropping by 17% across major networks like ABC, ESPN, and TNT. In contrast, the NFL enjoyed a surge in popularity, recording its highest average viewership per game in a decade. This stark contrast prompted discussions about the underlying reasons for the league’s struggles.

Commissioner Adam Silver suggested that the ratings decline was not necessarily due to a lack of interest in the game. One theory posited that the strong emphasis on social justice issues had alienated some fans. Since 2020, the league had actively engaged in promoting social causes, which some viewers felt overshadowed the sport itself. Although the league had toned down its messaging, prominent players like LeBron James and Stephen Curry remained politically vocal.

Another contributing factor to the ratings decline was the absence of key star players due to injuries. High-profile athletes, including Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant, and Luka Doncic, missed multiple games, reducing the excitement surrounding their respective teams. The lack of marquee matchups likely affected the overall viewer engagement.

Silver also highlighted the shift in viewing habits, noting that more people were turning to streaming services rather than traditional cable TV. This trend affected not only the league but also other sports, including college basketball and the NHL. To adapt, the NBA planned to ensure all games would be available on streaming platforms starting the following year.

Just recently, Durant shared his opinion on why the league’s ratings have declined. This can be seen in a post he shared on his official X account.

“I truly believe people consume content all day everyday, by time 7pm hits they are drained and don’t want anymore,” Durant tweeted.

Durant expressed his views on the recent decline in ratings, attributing the issue to the media’s programming of fans. He believed that the constant focus on particular narratives and storylines might have alienated some viewers. Durant emphasized the need for a broader portrayal of the league, highlighting the diverse talents and exciting games that often went underappreciated.

He urged the media to present a more balanced perspective, suggesting that a shift in coverage could reignite fan interest. Ultimately, Durant’s insights hinted at the potential for rejuvenating the league’s appeal to a wider audience.
