Jason Kidd’s Saturday night lasted just six minutes and 16 seconds. Dallas Mavericks coach got the boot after going nuclear on referee Scott Foster during Dallas’ 125-107 loss to the Chicago Bulls at United Center. Foster hit Kidd with back-to-back technical fouls for dropping F-bombs at the refs.

The whole mess started over a goaltending call on Max Christie with 5:44 left in the first quarter. Kidd tried to challenge the play, but Foster shut it down because the window had already closed. That set off one of the quickest ejections in recent memory as Kidd let Foster know exactly how he felt about the ruling.

Foster broke down the entire sequence in the postgame pool report conducted by Will Gottlieb of CHGO Sports. The crew chief explained that a goaltend was called during live play on Christie’s block attempt. Dallas tried calling a timeout after they’d already inbounded the ball following the whistle.
“You always doing this Scott. You cheated the Pacers all the way throughout out the Finals last year. Don’t cheat me, dumbass.”

“The window closes for replay challenge once the thrower-in is given the ball,” Foster told reporter Gottlieb. “[Kidd] used profanity toward an official on two separate occasions and was given a technical foul for each occasion.”
The pool report confirmed Dallas was granted the timeout but couldn’t challenge the play. Foster made it clear the challenge window had shut once the Mavs prepared to inbound. Kidd couldn’t accept that explanation and unloaded on the officials twice, earning himself an early trip to the locker room.
Replays showed Christie pinned Ayo Dosunmu’s layup before it touched the backboard. It looked like a clean block, but officials still ruled it goaltending. That call, paired with Scott Foster’s tight handling of the challenge rules, flipped the game fast.

Frank Vogel took over head coaching duties for the rest of the night after Kidd left the locker room. Mavs were down 18-13 when Kidd got tossed and they couldn’t recover their score. Ultimately, the Bulls dominated with seven players hitting double figures and crushed the Mavs 38-8 in transition points.
This marked just Kidd’s second ejection since becoming Dallas coach in 2021. His first came nearly four years ago. The usually stoic sideline presence couldn’t keep his cool against Foster, who’s known for his strict officiating style and quick trigger finger on technicals.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Dallas with Anthony Davis sidelined due to hand ligament damage. Now they’re dealing with the fallout of their coach getting run before the first quarter even ended.
