The Sacramento Kings are looking to strengthen their backcourt after trading away De’Aaron Fox during the 2024-25 NBA season. One of the guard prospects for the Kings this offseason is one-time MVP Russell Westbrook. Although he isn’t the star player he once used to be, Westbrook still brings a lot to the table with his experience.

Last season, he played a reserved role for the Denver Nuggets, appearing in 75 games. He averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists on 44.9% shooting. He was mostly a sixth man for the Nuggets, but he still made a significant impact on the team.

This time, he’s a free agent once again. There’s a chance he could play with another passing big man in Domantas Sabonis, as the Kings have taken an interest in the nine-time All-Star.

Radio host Carmichael Dave hinted on X that there’s a big chance that the Sacramento Kings will acquire Westbrook.

“And they should be,” Dave posted on X. “It’s not done, but it’s been cooking for a while. And there is strong interest from both sides. I’d say 80-20 he’s a King.”

Westbrook’s athleticism could pair well with Sabonis’ passing ability. However, it creates a problem with DeMar DeRozan, as he isn’t a threat from beyond the arc. All three players are unreliable from the 3-point range, and it could clog up the paint, creating an offensive struggle for all three.

But with their experience, a potential trio between the non-shooting stars could be entertaining to watch.

Westbrook hasn’t been a top point guard for the past four seasons, which is why he’s bounced around the league. With the likelihood that he could be part of the Sacramento Kings’ organization, fans had varying reactions to the free agency rumors.

“There is literally no reason for him to go to the kings,” a fan said.

“Sacramento really had Haliburton and Fox and they fumbled both. Now they have to settle for Westbrook,” another fan commented.

“He’s retiring ringless I fear,” one fan said.
