It’s a new season for the NBA, and San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has displayed a different brand of basketball. He’s more aggressive and intelligent with the basketball, which is how he was able to dominate against the Dallas Mavericks. Last season, Wembanyama was settling for more jumpers. For the 2025-26 season, he’s taking full advantage of his length by being everywhere on the court.

The Spurs star had a strong 40-point game against the tall Mavericks team. Dallas started the game with Dereck Lively II at the center spot and Anthony Davis at the four. Rookie star Cooper Flagg, who’s listed at 6-foot-9, played the point guard. But that was nothing to Wemby, as he added 15 boards and three blocks to the stat sheet, leading the Spurs to a 125-92 win..

Fans were amazed by how Wemby played against the Spurs’ old rival, with many crowning him as the early-season pick to win MVP. Even former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins had a strong take regarding the Frenchman.

On Thursday’s episode of FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back,” Cousins crowned Victor Wembanyama as the top player in the league right now.

“One game in, I’m going with Wemby as No. 1 [player in the NBA]. I saw all I needed to see. He’s number one for me,” Cousins said. “It ain’t five, four, three or two.”

During the offseason, Wemby made sure to work on his game to prepare for his third season in the NBA. In just the first game of the year, it has been evident that the work he has put in has panned out well.

Every NBA fan was hyped after Victor Wembanyama’s performance, including Cousins. In the recent episode of “Run It Back,” the former Sacramento Kings star admitted that he immediately bought a Wemby jersey after the big man’s performance.

“I definitely ordered a jersey,” Cousins admitted. “He gained a fan last night. I was [already] a fan [before]. I knew he was a talent. But what I saw last night — I purchased a jersey. I had to. Right away.”

His co-host, Michelle Beadle, was happy with what he did. Beadle is a life-long fan of the Spurs and was excited that Boogie bought a Wembanyama jersey.

Fans are looking forward to seeing Wembanyama keep up the aggressive start to the year. The 2024 Rookie of the Year has put the Spurs on the map, turning them into a potential threat in the West.
