Fake news hit the NBA timeline hard Friday, attaching Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr’s name, which left the majority of the fanbase off guard.
A viral post falsely claimed the Golden State Warriors had axed Kerr. While the 60-year-old coach has been ejected five times during his tenure, including a recent ejection in January, that has nothing to do with his job status. The post drew nearly 1M views in under 12 hours, though the claim is fake.
He recently coached Golden State in their 140–124 win over the Utah Jazz, improving their record to 27-22. But recent speculation about Kerr’s future created the perfect storm for misinformation to spread.
Satire Post Claims Warriors Allegedly Axe Steve Kerr
The fake report came from a satire account focused on Toronto Raptors humor. The post mimicked breaking news formatting with “BREAKING” in all caps, including a stern photo of Kerr looking frustrated on the sideline.

“BREAKING: The Golden State Warriors have fired Steve Kerr,” the tweet read. “More details are expected to release.” And it exploded immediately.
Folks who didn’t check the source’s bio shared it across platforms and were left scratching their heads. Recent rumors, however, helped fuel the fake story to go viral.
On January 22, The Ringer’s Logan Murdock reported that multiple Warriors assistant coaches don’t expect Kerr to return next season. That report set off some legitimate discussion about Kerr’s future in Golden State.
Moreover, the Lebanon native is in the final year of his contract and hasn’t signed an extension yet. Internal conflicts between players and coaching staff have been reported throughout the season, which reached a breaking point about his job security when Draymond Green and Kerr got into a heated argument during a timeout.

So, fans assumed the worst when they saw the “BREAKING” tweet. The post hit 500,000 views in less than an hour. It’s expected to surpass 1.5 million within 24 hours.
Real NBA insiders quickly shot down the rumor. But the damage was done. Thousands of fans believed Kerr got axed before seeing the corrections. The post’s momentum carried it to massive viewership despite being debunked.
NBA Fans React to Fake Steve Kerr Firing Report
NBA insiders quickly shut down the rumor, but many fans had already believed it before the corrections spread. Even after being debunked, the post kept circulating and continued to rack up views. Those who caught it as a fake report couldn’t hold their laughter.
One fan wrote, “For that gambling he doing probably. Sitting stars out whole quarters for no reason.”
Another noted, “It’s genocide lol.”
The third fan penned, “lol should have focused on basketball and not politics.”
A fourth fan added, “🤣🤣🤣 nah lol but funny 🤷🏻♂️”
A random X user remarked, “Holy shit, they didn’t even give dude a chance to resign after all he’s done for them?”
For now, Kerr remains with the team to lead them from the sideline despite ongoing roster uncertainty. His era is not over yet, and there is no indication it will end before the season does.
