There’s still plenty of time for the New Orleans Pelicans to turn their season around, but a 5-21 start may be too big of a hurdle for the team to return from if they want to make an automatic postseason berth.
It’s not the lack of talent that’s killing the Pelicans’ chances of a deep playoff campaign: rumors of the organization changing their minds around Brandon Ingram, alongside a cast of decent NBA-level talent, shows that the front office is doing everything to build the best team to compete.

However, the health of their star player has always been the thing that’s stopping them from winning more games. Zion Williamson has only played six games this season, and his lack of availability spurs rumors that the Pels are looking to restart without him.
Pelicans fans are dissatisfied with how the season is going, and one player shares their frustrations after a rough game against a Western Conference rival.
Trey Murphy III expresses frustrations over form during the New Orleans Pelicans’ loss vs. Kings

Trey Murphy III is one of the New Orleans Pelicans’ standout performers in a lackluster season. While he’s also been dealing with injury concerns, he’s been one of the more consistent contributors to a squad that seems headed to a rebuild in the coming draft.
What sucked Murphy and the Pels the most was how their most recent loss to the Sacramento Kings was especially close despite Zion and BI not playing due to injury. The worse part was how Murphy only scored five points from the second until he fourth quarter after netting 16 in the first.
He talked about his frustrations, as reported by Sports Illustrated’s Terry Kimble:
“I just tried to play the right way I guess,” he told reporters in the locker room. “Trying to find my shots elsewhere and try to be aggressive. I don’t know what else to tell you.”
It’s understandable why the 24-year-old felt disappointed with his form during the game. He’s had a breakout season in 2024-25, averaging 18.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists a game through 12 games. He’s become one of the most reliable contributors for Willie Green’s Pelicans as Williamson struggles to keep himself healthy.

It will be a long season for the Pelicans if the front office decides to call it quits with their playoff pursuit. Trey Murphy III and the rest of the roster can use the remaining games to sharpen their skills and look to compete in the next season.
