“Not an Upgrade Over Thibs” – New York Knicks Fans are Ambivalent About Mike Brown’s Head Coaching Appointment

The hiring of Mike Brown as the new head coach of the New York Knicks drew mixed reactions from fans, who offered their thoughts and jokes on social media.

While most fans believe Brown isn’t necessarily an upgrade over Tom Thibodeau, considering what the latter has done for the New York Knicks in the past few seasons, there are a few who are hopeful about his hire.

“Mike Brown is not an upgrade over Thibs,” Jared Smith of FOX Sports Radio posted. “Argue with me all you want, call me a dumbo, but he has been a head coach four times before and has been fired four times without winning a title. But sure, the fifth time is the charm.”

“The NBA loves recycling head coaches instead of giving new guys a chance.”

“Solid hire for them. Not sure he puts them over the top, but a good coach.”

“He’s def a better Xs n Os guy than Thibs and he’s actually just as good of a motivator…maybe not the sexiest name but i actually like the hire,” another fan chimed in.

New York Knicks Rumors: Former No. 1 pick labeled as the team’s potential free agent target

In other news, the New York Knicks reportedly “checked in” on Ben Simmons, according to SNY’s Ian Begley. Playing for New York is not a foreign concept for Simmons, who played for the Brooklyn Nets from 2022 to 2025.

Following his $40 million buyout by Brooklyn last February, Simmons signed for the rest of the 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Clippers, serving as one of their backup bigs.

The New York Knicks can only offer a veteran’s minimum to Simmons since they will be over the second apron, with the pending free agency additions of Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele.
