Tom Thibodeau’s New York Knicks Contract Extension Gets Crucial Update

After making the New York Knicks relevant again, head coach Tom Thibodeau is up for a contract extension to keep his services within the Big Apple. This is now more likely as NBA insider Marc Stein has come out with a crucial update about the matter.

Born in 1958 in Connecticut, Thibodeau excelled in basketball during his high school days and later played for Salem State College, where he also began his coaching career as an assistant in 1981.

After spending four years as an assistant at Harvard University, Thibodeau entered the NBA in 1989 as an assistant coach with the expansion Minnesota Timberwolves. He has since served as an assistant coach for several NBA teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, and Boston Celtics, with whom he won an NBA championship in 2008.

Thibodeau’s defensive coaching skills have been highly regarded, with his teams consistently ranking among the league’s top defensive units. He was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2021 for his work with the Chicago Bulls and the New York Knicks, respectively. Thibodeau has also served as an assistant coach for the United States men’s national basketball team, helping them win a gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Thibodeau was signed by New York back in 2020 and has transformed the team from a disappointing squad to a competitive team led by All-Star guard Jalen Brunson. His success in doing so has fueled rumors that he’ll be bestowed with an extension by the Knicks’ front office, an expectation that just got a major update from Stein’s newsletter.

“There was a strong expectation in the desert that a contract extension for Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau will be announced in the near future,” Stein said.

Before Thibodeau took on the Knicks’ coaching gig, the team was seen as a constant disappointment after missing out on big free agents and not being bad enough for high draft picks. Now, the former Chicago Bulls head coach has transformed the team to playoff contenders, especially with the addition of young wing Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets.

It remains to be seen how much Thibodeau will receive from New York in the coming weeks. If anything, it’s almost sure he’ll get a big bag for the good he has done in the Big Apple.
